About Sam

From a young age I was surrounded by music. I watched my father, Geoff Notman, play drums in a pipe band and a Celtic band. I would sit in on rehearsals and be fascinated by all the amazing sounds.

I drummed all through school – missing classes just to play drums.  I studied at Whitireia School of Music, mentored by drum lecturer Rick Cranson. My knowledge is always growing but the foundation of my love of learning began at Whitireia.

Now I gig with a range of different artists – from touring around NZ to playing on cruise ships to jamming at local Wellington venues.

I’m in my element when playing live.I’ve played at festivals around New Zealand including - Homegrown, Festival One, Parachute, Wellington Botanical Gardens Sound Shell, TSB Festival Of The Lights and Tora Tora Tora

As a session drummer, I’m often recording percussion parts in the studio or performing live with artists. Every project is different. The process of working with many different people energises me - playing all genres of music including jazz, blues, Latin and rock. But I feel most in my element playing funk, RnB, hip-hop, and experimental jazz.
